Dealing with Separation Anxiety

Are you planning to leave your child with a carer for the first time? Is he/she going to a new nursery/ school this autumn? All parents face at some stage the difficult exercise of teaching their children how to separate.

Separation produces conflicting emotions: Your child may feel fear or doubt about still being loved. He/she could also feel confusion or anger at the situation. They will also be feeling excited about the new experience, the new friends and about having fun! Parents might experience mixed feelings of excitement and guilt.

In order to minimise anxiety for both the child and the parent, here are a few tips that we’ve collected from our readers:

In preparation:

1- Several weeks before, take the child to the location of the new school/ childminder and if possible meet the person who will be taking care of him. You can do this progressively by visiting the outside of the premises, then the actual room he will be in, then meet the carer.

2- Read with your child a few books about separation issues and about going to school for the first time. Your child will understand that others feel the way he does and that it is normal.

3- Prepare all the items you need the day before to avoid rushing last minute. You can set up a nighttime and a morning ritual for further re-assurance.

4- If possible, let your child take a comforter to nursery (their favourite teddy bear, a blanket …) and a photo of the parents.

5- If your child has been off on a long holiday, send him to school with a reminder of the holidays: for instance something that they’ve created or a photo that they can talk about and share.

On the day:

1- Help your child understand the routine of the day and schedule of events: “You will first have circle time, then a snack, then playtime, then lunch then a nap. And then mummy will pick you up”

2- Set fixed parameters and stick strictly to your promises: “I will stay with you for 5 minutes, then tell you goodbye and leave the room”

3- If your child is doing well, avoid prolonging the goodbye. Sometimes parents feel more distressed than the child and can communicate those feelings to him.

4- NEVER leave without saying goodbye, even if your child seems to be fully engaged in an activity.

5- Tear are normal and part of the process. Don’t ask your child to stop crying and don’t bribe him!

6- If you have to leave your child in tears, arrange to call the carer/ teacher back to get re-assurance.

7- Be on time for pickup to avoid unnecessary worrying.

Depending on your child’s age, he/she might be at a different developmental stage and might react differently to other children. Remember that separation is a necessary step in everyone’s life and that any anxiety will pass. Try not to feel guilty as this will help your child adapt better to the new arrangement!

Natural History Museum

5- Natural History Museum: Dinosaurs, Ostriches, Sea creatures and other wonders. Children love exploring and learning about animals. The queue to the Natural History Museum is often long but it’s worth it!

The Science Museum: A stone throw away from the Natural History Museum, it can often be visited on the same day trip. The Science Museum is an educational journey and the play area on the lower ground floor is must! Our little ones love the boats and water installation. We’ve also seen amazing giant bubble shows in the theatre on the lower ground.

If you don’t want to travel far, check out your closest Park, they often have great playground options, sand pits or paddling pools. The Diana Memorial Fountain is a great place for children to splash in the water and escape the heat. Queens Park and Primrose Hill have great sand pits, and don’t miss out on the small petting zoo in Queen’s Park. Other popular playgrounds can be found in Hampstead Heath, Hyde Park, Holland Park and Kensington Gardens.

My Perfected Lemon Cake Recipe

I made a number of lemon cakes in the last few weeks to get it perfectly right. It’s also due to the fact that my daughter loves baking, i.e. stirring the batter, and lemon doesn’t stain my carpet like chocolate does!

The secret is in putting the lemon zest in the batter, so don’t get lazy and skip this step!

The quantities are for 2 medium cake loaves. If you’re going through the hassle, you may as well do 2 cakes in one go.

Ingredients:

  • 4 eggs
  • 3 lemons
  • 225 g of butter
  • 400 g of flour
  • 350 of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 250 ml of buttermilk or soured cream
  • 2 cups of powdered sugar (icing sugar)

My step by step lemon cake recipe:

Preheat the oven to 180 / 200 C

1- Mix 350g of sugar with 225g of butter until smooth. You can use an electric mixer or a manual one.

2- Add 4 eggs, 1 at a time and mix thoroughly.

Add the zest of 3 lemons – keep the lemons aside for later use

3- In another bowl, mix 3 cups of flour (400g), half a teaspoon of baking soda, half a teaspoon of baking powder.

4- In a third bowl, mix the juice of 2 lemons with a teaspoon of vanilla extract and 250 ml of buttermilk (You can also use soured cream)

5- Alternatively add the flour mixture and the buttermilk mixture to the batter.

6- Grease and flour 2 loaf pans. You can use vegetable oil instead of butter to grease your loaf pans.

Divide the batter evenly between the 2 pans.

If you only have one loaf pan you can cook half of the batter first and half of it later.

7- Bake for about 45 min to 1 hour, until a knife that you dig in the cake come out clean.

8- Cool for 10 min- that’s the easiest step, so you can sit down and chill. When the cakes are cool, take them out of the pan and put them on your cake stand or dish.

9- Mix 2 cups of powdered sugar (icing sugar) with the juice of 1 lemon and whisk until smooth.

10- Poor over the tops of the cakes and allow to drizzle down the sides. Leave the cakes to rest until the icing becomes hard.
